Work completion calculation
Last modified:
The percentage on any list (depends on your Grouping) summarizes how much work was completed based on the assumption that all cards take a similar effort to the complete. The best way to explain it is to use an example. Here we go:
Example:
We have a Board using the User View (all cards are grouped by responsible users). The view shows you one List for each responsible user and below you see her/his cards. If any card or its portions (Todos or Sub cards) are completed, you will see a counter at the head of the list representing xx% of work completed for this User.
How does the formula work?
Suppose you have a list for a User with 4 Cards.
- One of them does not have any Todos nor Sub cards.
- The second card has 5 Todos,
- the third one has 2 Sub Cards (even in other Boards),
- and the last one has 2 Todos and 3 Sub cards (even in other Boards).
100% = all work done
4 Cards = 100% / 4 = 25% per card
Card 1
If Completed (by status or list role) the List will show 25%.
Card 2
25% are split between 5 ToDos: 25% / 5 = 5% per ToDo – completing each ToDo will add 5% to the percentage counter at the top of the list. If you set the card to completed using status or list role before all Todos are marked as completed the algorithm will ignore the Todos and the percentage counter at the top of the list will add the whole Card portion of completion which is 25% in this scenario.
Card 3
25% are split between 2 SubCards: 25% / 2 = 12.5% – if one Sub card is completed KanBo will ad 12,5% to the percentage counter at the top of the list. If you set the card to completed using status or list role before all Sub cards are completed the algorithm will ignore the status of completion of Sub cards and the percentage counter at the top of the list will add the whole Card portion of completion which is 25% in this scenario.
Card 4
25% are split between 2 Todos and 3 Sub Cards together equal 5 Elements: 25% / 5 = 5% per Element – completing each ToDo or a Sub Card will add 5% to the percentage counter at the top of the list. Again, using status or list role before completion of the subsequent Card elements will override the calculation and the percentage counter at the top of the list will add the whole Card portion of completion which is 25% in this scenario.
Some final words:
We are aware that this approach is not always right since treating a ToDo similar to a SubCard is mostly wrong, but our intention was to give you a rough estimate.
Please note that this works for Lists in any type of the 5 available grouping views KanBo provides.
