How can KanBo be installed on my premises?

Yes, KanBo can be installed on your premises. And it can it be installed on your Sharepoint environment without any interfaces.

KanBo is a SharePoint Provider hosted App that does not execute any code on SharePoint Servers. The backend of the KanBo is run on a separate App server (preferably on IIS8 (the Microsoft Web Server). The communication with SharePoint is implemented through the CSOM SharePoint Interface.

The following integrations are already implemented and ready for production:

  • Attaching any (also already existing) Document Library to KanBo Boards and Documents to KanBo cards. So you might have cards that have documents attached from different Site Collections/Libraries. We have built this feature to decouple the mostly static and not changeable structure how you store documents from the fast changing project/process lifecycle. You can create contexts (cards) that contain information from different sources to have all relevant information (not only documents but also data from other systems like SAP and the complete communication like emails through our Outlook KanBo AddIn -  or direct conversations in the card) in a single, constant place. It is very important to understand that you can attach the same document to many cards or even to cards in another Boards – the document stays in its original location and is not being duplicated – it just belongs/is being used in many contexts. In regards of security KanBo observes/respects the security of SharePoint so if you connect a Document Library to a KanBo Board and start attaching documents from there to cards then regardless which people have access the cards through KanBo user management, only users that are permitted to access the original document library will be able to access documents attached to cards from that document library.   •  In KanBo you can follow certain cards in order to get notified (also via Email if you turn it on) about things/contexts that are of particular interest to you. Any card movement, comment, Due Date, Note, Checklist. User assignment or Document Version changes will feed into the card activity stream (the middle part of the card). So if you follow a card – you follow a certain context and if this context also contains documents all changes of these documents are monitored by KanBo and delivered to you because they are part of the card/context that you chose to follow – you decide how much information you can process.   • Another interesting integration piece between KanBo and Sharepoint might be the coupling between KanBo Boards and Lists in SharePoint. It is possible to set up a bidirectional real-time link between them. When you establish the link a SP List Item will be represented in KanBo as a card and vice versa – when you create a card an Item will be created. In the end you can define certain fields in the SharePoint List to be updated in Cards and update List Items when you move the card through the Board lists or change due dates. It is even possible to extend the List Item View by displaying the KanBo card blow it – so you can see all the information kept inside of the KanBo card together with the Fields of a SharePoint Item. What I just described works also with Document libraries but it makes more sense if you have some Meta Data fields defined for the Document Library you link with a Board. Of course, the linking and configuring works without any coding – just activate a certain feature and use the SharePoint out of the box List views to define the fields to be replicated in KanBo.
  • Please be also aware that KanBo creates a SharePoint Site from a SharePoint Site Template that you specify every time you create a new Board. The default template is Team Site. KanBo is also synchronises the users you add to KanBo with the SharePoint Site created during the board creation process so you do not have to keep it in sync manually. Additionally, you can use Active Directory Groups to control access to KanBo boards.
